Interview with Berean Institute Football Head Coach, Brett Dunlap

You might not have heard about them - yet. The Berean Institute Bears football team play in the Junior College Athletic Association and are only in their fourth year of existence (second year in the JCAA). But they have already turned many heads and are picking up steam every day.
Part of this is due to a very eager and energetic sponsorship from the Philadelphia Sports Training Center, spearheaded by co-owner and former high school All-American Maine Prince (to check out their website supporting the Berean Bears, head to http://www.bereansports.com/).

The other part is due to the energy and focus of the head coach, Brett Dunlap, who seems beyond ready for his team to take on all challenges and possibly qualify for a bowl game. Digitex-U got a chance to catch up with Coach Dunlap to talk about the upcoming season, the players to watch for, and much more.

Digitex-U Player of the Game: Will Adam from Imhotep

Not only was he the player of the game, but he was also the unanimous choice for player of the Girard College Summer League. Will Adam from Imhotep earns Digitex-U Player of the Game honors with his 20 point effort in the 48-41 Panther victory over the Prep Charter Huskies. After the game Digitex-U caught up with him and his coach (who preferred to be called, "Coach Jared") for a postgame interview.

Postgame Interview

Imhotep hangs on to win Girard Championship Game, 48-41 over Prep Charter

Cheesman A. Herrick Fieldhouse, North Philadelphia - For up until half an hour before the championship game of the Girard College Summer League, the Cheesman A. Herrick was empty and quiet. All of that came converted to a fevered pitch and frenzied atmosphere in a game between two rivals looking to take the League championship trophy home. On this evening, the Imhotep Panthers were able to outlast the Prep Charter huskies, 48-41, to recieve the honors.

The Panthers were led by Junior Will Adam, who led all scorers with 20 points. He was able to do it mostly in the paint, and also converted his free throws, which all turned out to be very crucial. Also helping to lead the Panthers to victory was Lamar Trice (7 points), who handled most of the point guards duties and ran the offense effectively.

The Huskies were never out of the game, and in fact led at several different points. They were led by Paris Grant, who had 17 points and played aggressively. However, Prep Charter seemed to get caught up in the physicallity of the game and it may have been the factor that threw them off in the final minutes. Imhotep managed to pull away to the 7 point victory by getting a few clutch steals towards the end, and some key offensive rebounds such as one made by Miguel Bocachica with about a minute left to go after a missed Imhotep free throw.

Coach Jared of the Panthers said that he really wanted them to beat Prep Charter, a team that Imhotep has had trouble fending off in the past. Not only did they accomplish that goal, but they also did so en route to earning the honors of raising a championship trophy. And a once quiet armory ended up housing not only a crowd of appreciative fans, but a hardworking, summer league championship team as well.

Girard College vs. Prep Charter Audio Highlights

Here are the audio highlights of Prep Charter's 68-50 win over Girard College in the second round of the Girard College Summer League Playoffs from Wednesday night

DU Sports Player of the Game: Ferguson Myrick of Prep Charter

A blow to the head seemed to motivate him more than anything. Despite being shaken up in the first half due to being accidentally kicked in the head, Ferguson Myrick of Prep Charter came back into the game and dominated, getting 23 points in the 68-50 win over Girard College and earning Digitex-U Player of the Game honors.

Prep Charter advance to Championship game; defeat Girard College 68-50

Cheesman A Herrick Fieldhouse, North Philadelphia - Although the Prep Charter Huskies only dressed 6 players, they had enough feul in the tank to spark a 68-50 victory over Girard College and move on to the championship game of the Girard College Summer League Playoffs on Monday night.

Ferguson Myrick of the Huskies led all scorers with 23 points, with most of them coming inside the paint. He was shaken up in the first half after getting kicked in the head, causing him to lay on the floor for about a minute and subsequently rest on the bench. He came back in, however, and seemed motivated, especially in the second half. Myrick was assisted by Jesse Morgan who had 17 points and proved to be a relentless threat to the Cavaliers with drives to the inside coming from as far out as the perimeter.

Girard kept the game close in the first half due to inspired play from Terrell Candelleria and Omar Ford-bey in particular, who finished the game with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Despite the Cavaliers efforts, they were not able to get over the hump that was the Huskies first half lead - getting it as close as 2 points headed to halftime, but not able to get it any closer.

Prep Charter turned on the heat in the second half and ran more fast breaks despite their short bench. The game slowed down halfway into the second half due to an increase in foul calls and free throw shots. This worked to the Huskies' favor, as the clock does not stop in this summer league for free throws until the last two minutes of each half. Thus Prep Charter was able to add to their lead and burn off precious time, and the end result was an 18 points victory for the Huskies.

Prep Charter moves on to the Girard College Summer League Championship Game which will be held at the Cheesman A. Herrick Fieldhouse on Monday Night at 6:30pm. Digitex-U Sports will be there for coverage.

Digitex-U Player of the Game: Karon Reed of Girard College High School

Showtime was spelled R-e-e-d last night as Karon Reed from Girard College High School stole the show with emphatic dunks and great athleticism. His 12 points led all scorers and helped the Cavaliers advance to the second round of the Girard Summer League playoffs with a 55-33 win over the Conwell-Egan Eagles. For his efforts, Reed earned Digitex-U Player of the Game honors.

Postgame Interview

Girard College dominate Conwell-Egan 55-33 to advance in Girard Summer League Playoffs

Cheesman A Herrick Fieldhouse, Girard College - The Girard College Cavaliers wanted to start the playoffs of the summer league being held on their home court right - and that they did with a convincing, albeit sometimes sloppy 55-33 victory over the Conwell Egan Eagles.

Karon Reed of the Cavaliers led all scorers with 12 points including three tremendous dunks that got the team motivated and the crowd going. Terrell Candeleria chipped in 11, and John Johnson added 8 points.

The first half played out evenly, with both Girard and Conwell-Egan having trouble making shots and retaining possession. Hike Gyokchan of Conwell-Egan, the tallest player on the court who ended the game with 10 points, tried to carry the Eagles through the rough stretch with aggressive play and inside presence. It proved to be too little; Girard went on an early run to get a 21-14 lead and never looked back, turning the second half into a showcase of terrific slams and graceful layups.

The Cavaliers move on to the second round of the playoffs, which will be Wednesday at 6:15pm. Digitex-U Sports will be there to cover the game.

Digitex-U Player of the Game: Mark Tyndale of Team Aaron Mckie

He brought the game all summer for Team Aaron Mckie, so much that it led them to the Sonny Hill College Division Championship. Mark Tyndale of Temple University is our Digitex-U Player of the Game for his efforts in the 75-72 Aaron Mckie victory over James Flint, and he earns Digitex-U Player of the Summer honors as well.

Team Aaron Mckie win the Sonny Hill Championship Division with a 75-72 win over Team James Flint

McGonigle Hall, Temple University: A championship game worthy of the name ended with Team Aaron Mckie snatching the Sonny Hill College Division trophy away from Team James Flint with an 75-72.

It was a back and forth contest where stars of both teams stepped up at numerous times. For Team Aaron McKie, it was mainly Mark Tyndale, whose speed and agility and ability to use screens effectively (a lot of which were set by his teammate, London Houston) made him a nightmare forthe James Flint defense. For James Flint, they were led by Reggie Redding and Shane Clark, two big time players who have been leading the charge all summer.

The game came down to the last few seconds; after Tyndale hit two free throws to give Aaron McKie a three point lead with 16 seconds left, James Flint had one more chance to tie the game. But a three point shot by Shane Clark bounced out of the basket, and Aaron McKie survived the intense matchup to secure the College Division championship trophy. The question is, do they have what it takes to do the same thing next year?

Interstate Realty win the 11/12th Grade Sonny Hill Championship over the Diamond Medics, 91-84

McGonigle Hall, Temple University: Interstate Realty sent some of their players off to college with a nice parting gift; a summer championship trophy. They were able to hold on and defeat the Diamond Medics 91-84 to win the 11/12 Grade Division of the Sonnny Hill Community Involvement Summer League at McGonigle Hall Friday night.

Interstate Realty was led by Bradley Wannamaker from Roman Catholic, who played aggresively on offense with slashes to the basket, and Jermaine Washington from Imhotep, who set the tone early with well-timed jump shots and three-pointers. Ramone Moore added many crucial baskets for the team as well.

As has been a trend for most of the high schools games in this league, the first half was competitive, but the second half saw one team (in this case, Interstate Realty) pull away. The Medics never seemed able to get a good groove going in the game, despite tough play from multiple players, including Sammie Givens and Khalif Foster. In the end, the Medics just could not put together enough defense to stop Interstate Realty.

So Interstate Realty wins the 11/12th grade championship, and while some players move on to college play (and maybe next summer's college league) others will be back to defend the championship with pride.

Championship Friday for the Sonny Hill League

Digitex-U Sports will be there for Championship Friday, as the end of Championship Week I brings us the 11/12 grade division final and the college division final of the Sonny Hill League.

At 7:15, The Diamond Medics, led by the Givens brothers (Sammie and Shannon) will go up against Interstate Realty in the 11/12th grade division final.

At 8:30, Mark Tyndale and team Aaron McKie will face Reggie Redding, Nate Edwards, and Team James Flynt in the College Division final.

It's a doubleheader for Digitex-U Sports, as we will gather interviews, video, photos, and highlights for both games from what should be a packed McGonigle Hall at Temple University.

Keep it right here at Digitex-U Sports for all of the action, as we bid farewell to the 2007 season of the Sonny Hill Community Involvement Summer League.

Digitex-U Player of the Game: Reggie Redding from Villanova

When team James Flint needed someone to step up to help put Bob Black away, Reggie Redding of Villanova answered the call. With a game leading 23 points, and a second half surge that included a clutch three-point shot and a crowd pleasing slam, Reggie Redding earned Digitex-U Player of the Game honors in James Flint's 83-77 victory over Bob Black.

James Flint advance to Sonny Hill Championship Game with 83-77 win over Bob Black

McGonigle Hall, Temple University - The championship game of the Sonny Hill League College Division is set, and James Flint made sure to stake their claim for the title.
James Flint won an entertaining contest over Bob Black, 83-77, and will play Team Aaron McKie in the Sonny Hill College Division Championship Game tonight at 8:30pm.
James Flint was led by Reggie Reading from Villanova, who led all scorers with 23 points. He was followed by Shane Clark (also from Villanova) who had 20 points, and Nate Edwards from Kutztown who had 18 points.

Team Bob Black had the lead for most of the first half, led by the gritty play of Mike Green, who made outside shots and drove to the basket well, and Andreas Schrieber of Upenn, who started the game with a flurry of inside dominance that James Flint seemed unable to contain. James Flint mounted a comeback due to inspired play from their dynamic trio discussed earlier, and the game went through many lead changes and much emotional drama.
With the game - and a trip to the championship - on the line, Reggie Reading stepped up with a clutch three from high left followed by an enormous dunk that seemed to shift the momentum permanently in the favor of James Flint. And Bob Black, with only 6 players dressed for the game, did not have enough fuel to mount a late comeback, despite James Flint having some late game troubles at the foul line.

So James Flint moves on and will face Team Aaron McKie (who defeated Carvision.com 77-76 in the game afterwards) for what should be a thrilling championship game. Digitex-U Sports will be there covering the contest.

Audio Highlights from Carvision.com vs. Lennon Financial

Here are the audio highlights from Carvision.com's 89-72 victory over Lennon Financial from Tuesday night in the first round of the Sonny Hill Playoffs.

Digitex-U Players of the Game: Ryan Brooks and Ronald Moore

They played so nice, we had to do Player of the Game twice.
For the first time ever, Digitex-U Sports honored two Players of the Game: Ryan Brooks from Temple and Ronald Moore from Sienna. Ryan had 20 points and Ronald had 27 points, leading Carvision.com to a victory over Lennon Financial, and a trip to the second round of the Sonny Hill Playoffs.

Carvision.Com runs past Lennon Financial, 89-72, to advance in Sonny Hill Playoffs

McGonigle Hall, Temple University - Carvision.com lived up to their name and ran past Lennon Financial to an 89-72 victory last night at McGonigle Hall. Carvision.com remained undefeated and advanced to the second round of the Sonny Hill Playoffs, where they will meet the winner of the Aaron McKie vs. Honor Foods matchup (game ended too late for our coverage).

Carvision.com were led by Ryan Brooks from Temple and Ronald Moore from Sienna, who had 20 points and 27 points, respectively. The team shot tremendously from the floor and ran the floor as fast and as crisp as anyone in the league has so far this summer.

Lennon Financial kept the game close in the first half due to the play of DJ Rivera and Stephen Jackson, who used their drives to the basket to bait Carvision's defense to clog the middle, thus freeing up outside shots for Lennon Financial. Lennon Financial also tried the running technique offensively, and while it worked to a degree, their inability to keep up with Carvision defensively is ultimately what cost them the game.

Lennon Financial, who were picked by various people to win the playoff tournament, will have to try again next year. Carvision.com looked really good, and as their undefeated streak continues, they just may to be the team to beat.

Digitex-U Sports interview with Sonny Hill, Part I

The 2007 Sonny Hill Community Involvement League Playoffs begin next Monday, and by next Friday, champions will be crowned, and another successful season will be in the books. I had a chance to talk to the founder of the league, Mr. Sonny Hill himself, about the origins of this acclaimed league and just what it means to the Philadelphia community and beyond.

Part 1 of the interview can be downloaded here.
Part 2 will be up later this week.

D-U Sports Player of the Game: John Noonan

He took them from the left - and made them. He took them from the right - and made them, too. John Noonan from Ursinus was on fire from the three-point line last night, connecting on 7 threes to compile 21 points in Camille Cosby's 79-58 victory over Honor Foods and earn D-U Sports Player of the Game.
After the game, I got a chance to catch up with him and see how he was able to torch the Honor Foods defense from the perimeter.

Team Camille Cosby defeats Honor Foods 79-58

McGonigle Hall, Temple University - As the regular season of the 2007 Sonny Hill Community Involvement Summer League comes to a close, teams look to head in to the playoffs with surging momentum. Camilly Cosby may have accomplished just that with a decisive 79-58 victory over Honor Foods last night in the College Division.

John Noonan led the charge for Camille Cosby with 21 points, hitting three point shots from numerous angles. Greg Beverly added a great inside presence on offense and defense, and Bilal Benn controlled the ball with confidence and provided a big mismatch for the Honor Foods defense.
Honor Foods fell behind from the start thanks to a game-opening slam by Semaj Inge, who used his speed to cause problems for Honor Foods the whole game. Honor Foods kept the game close in the first half due to aggressive play from Christopher Blake and Angelo Hernandez. Hernandez hurt his ankle in the first half and seemed to have a slight limp for the rest of the game.
Although Honor Foods got close to Camille Cosby several times, Camille Cosby had the grit to keep Honor Foods at bay, and picked up the key victory headed towards the playoffs. According to experts, Camille Cosby is a team to watch out for in the tournament.
